Strangers in Virtual Space

With social networking on the web – Seek and You will find – entered the 21st century.

As a business oriented social networking site, LinkedIn separates by three degrees one career-minded person from another by one other person meaning that is how much closer I am to finding business deals, jobs, expertise request, new ventures and much much more.

It’s a brokerage house between finders and seekers. An e-bay like platform where I am the value-added commodity. Hence, so much goes into the effort of personal branding.

How does it feel to be found by someone I don’t know? The childhood caveat of don’t talk to strangers still apply.

Once when someone I never met asked me nicely to connect with him, I did. But I paid for it by fighting my own cocktail of fear, uncertainly and doubt.

On another instance, I was rebuffed by someone whose policy it was to have at least one in-person meeting before accepting invites.

Does anyone realize that we are in a virtual space? All I need to do is close my account, and all this angst is gone as if we are such stuff as dreams are made on.

The street perception of LinkedIn is that unlike Facebook, here you can maintain a healthy dose of strangeness between you and your connections.

Connected individuals feel at ease being strangers in a virtual space.

That also makes it a choice forum to practice Love Thy Neighbor: We don’t commiserate with our connections, but by virtue of our shared connectivity, we still love each other.

The Human Brain

A New Year’s Inspiration: DARE SOMETHING WORTHY!

Fellow Toastmasters... forget the New Year’s resolutions. After the busyness of the holidays and encountering a small variety of mishaps (physical & financial) and mini crises (auto & computer) I was too tired to think about being resolved. Being resolved takes a lot of energy. Being resolved is that kind of energy where you square your shoulders, put your foot down and say “that’s it, no more”. It has it’s place at certain times. But in my practice as a Human Design Specialist I also know that many of us do not have the consistent, sustainable will power energy to follow through on being resolved.

But we can be open to being inspired! Being inspired makes it easy and effortless to say committed to something. When we are inspired our energy is motivated, our desire and our natural curiosity compels us to keep going even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

So how about a New Year’s Inspiration? Something that excites you, empowers you, something scintillating, something that makes you feel like YEA! I WANT TO DO THAT! I WANT TO BE THAT! For me, I have chosen an inspirational theme for this coming year...

DARE SOMETHING WORTHY!

It is a phrase I have often heard from the famous author and internet marketer, Joe Vitale, who most people know from his appearance in the movie “The Secret”.

So what am I daring to do that is worthy? I am inspired by the theme of “10”. It’s 2010, the birth of a new decade, it also happens to be a number corresponding to the date of my birth and this year is a powerful combination of that number as my 45th birthday this year is on 10-10-10. My endeavor for this theme and birthday is to be/become a 10 in body, mind and spirit. In essence, to birth a new self that will lay the foundation of what is to come for this next half of my life.

A 10 in body, for me this isn’t about having the perfect body. What is that anyway? It is different for everybody. For me, it means daring to do what it takes to have exceptional health, well being & vitality. Being physically fit, high energy, feeling alive. Let’s face it, YOUR HEALTH IS YOUR WEALTH. What good does it do to have a lot of money if you do not have the wellness, energy and vitality to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

This may mean letting go of some things in my life. Like some foods that I love but make me look and feel heavy. But it will also mean taking better care of me and my body - getting more of the services I give to others, massage, energy therapies, spa treatments. It may also mean delegating and outsourcing more so I am not always running around trying to do it all and wondering why my life is “out of balance”, why I’m so tired and can’t seem to get my act together. And as one of my favorite author’s, Louise Hay, so beautifully put it, it will mean DARING TO LOVE MYSELF, inside and out because that is truly a worthy endeavor.

A 10 in mind & spirit means having the courage to live what I want out of life. To dare getting out in front of people, speaking, being seen, daring to speak my truth. Daring to step beyond my normal boundaries and live out my potential as best I can. This may mean facing some fears, getting out there with your hands shaking, your face turning beet red, your mouth going dry and doing it afraid! Why? because it is worthy to do so, because it is worthwhile to push through your fears to get to your greatness.

If you want to be jumping for joy every day of your life, to have many more moments when you are saying Yes! in that joyfully exuberant way, you have to be willing to let go of the heaviness, the drudgery of life and decide that things are going to be different. Making that decision in your mind and heart paves the way for new opportunities to come to you.

A friend recently wrote to me with a very inspirational message that really embodies the essence of this theme, she said.. Don’t just talk the talk, LIVE IT, LIVE WHAT YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE. See it, feel it, taste it, smell it. Living our dreams is what we must aspire to do. People who are living their dreams are people who have come alive. Perhaps it was best put in the words of Howard Therman, a teacher of Dr. Martin Luther King...”Don’t ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive and do that...because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

So this is my New Year’s Inspiration, a new year’s adventure. Every adventure needs a theme song and the one I have chosen is Lee Ann Womack’s “I hope you dance.” Within that song is a beautiful lyric that says “When you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance!” That is what I will be asking myself with each new opportunity...Am I going to dance? Am I going to dare to get out there, push through the fear, push through the challenge to discover what I am capable of and enjoy the thrill of the accomplishment?

So rather than being resolved, be inspired! I dare you! to dare something worthy, to dare to live your dreams, to dare to live what you want out of life, to dare to do what makes you come alive! I hope you will join me so we can keep each other accountable, so each time you see me you can ask me “did you dance today Patti?”
